Breadsong Bakery

Got a lovely tomato and basil focaccia from Breadsong Bakery (Auburndale, MA) on Monday at the Central Square Farmers Market.

Good Night, And Good Luck, and Sideways

This weekend, we saw two films.

Good Night, And Good Luck was OK. Main reason to see it on the big screen is to appreciate some of the closeups. The period lighting and the integration of historical footage (the film damns McCarthy with his own words, as Edward Murrow did) were nice. David Strathairn was great as Murrow. The film was nicely executed, but there was nothing new about the message. The most noteworthy thing about this particular installment of Hollywood anti-McCarthyism treatment is that it's not so over-the-top as some of the others. Show it to your gradescool Civics class.

We also saw Sideways on DVD. I'd not seen it before, and was pleasantly surprised. I'd heard comments that made it sound like a buddy movie built around alcoholic antic gags, and so it was at the bottom of my to-watch list. Now I see why a lot of people found it a good film.

Canon Rebates

The Canon Rebates have been announced.

Given Canon's historical difficulty fulfilling these rebates, and the small size of the rebates, probably not worth it unless you were really going to buy three qualifying items anyway. Now would be a good time to buy a Digital Rebel XT and a couple lenses, though.

Keep in mind that used lenses regularly sell on eBay at or above B&H the street price of new ones.

Sadly, the 24-105mm/4L does not qualify for a rebate.

B&H and Adorama recently raised the price of the 50mm/1.4 from $300 to $320, so I'm trying not to get too excited about the $15 rebate.

B&H Closed

Since B&H is closed for most of October, with another long closing starting tomorrow 1pm, today before 11pm would be a great time to start working on your Canon rebates.

I just ordered a Canon EF 50mm/1.4 USM, as an upgrade from my current primary lens, the Canon EF 50mm/1.8 II. It darned well better ship before B&H closes.

Diffuserade

Mario Reyes avoids the $20 cost of a nice Sto-Fen diffuser by sticking a used Gatorade plastic bottle atop thousands of dollars of Nikon.
